Lincoln Castle’s Heritage Skills Centre great concrete pour!

Robert Woodhead Ltd started work on the Heritage Skills Centre in October 2011. The latest film about this exciting development shows the ‘great concrete pour’.

Craig Pygall, Contracts Manager at Robert Woodhead Ltd, explains, “The ‘great concrete pour’ was planned and orchestrated very precisely. An amazing 276 cubic metres of concrete was poured into the site to form the foundation of the building. Concrete lorries are not able to access the castle grounds therefore a large concrete pump had to be located in the council car park and the lorries discharged at this point. The concrete had to be pumped 174 metres through castle grounds into the site.”

Footage of the ‘great concrete pour’ as well as details from Rob Green, Project Architect at Arrol and Snell Ltd regarding the projects sustainability are included in the latest film. Rob Green comments, “There are many sustainable elements to the project. Using green roof, limecrete panels, glulam engineered timber frame and natural stone obtained locally from the Cathedral quarry. All these are very sustainable materials.”

Glenn Slater, Business Development Director at Robert Woodhead Ltd comments, “We were really excited when we won this project for three reasons. It’s the first new build project in the grounds of Lincoln Castle for over a hundred years, it’s in an historic setting which fits very well with one of our specialist conservation division,Woodhead Heritage and this project has to achieve BREEAM ‘very good’. What’s great about this is that it’s going to be a good demonstration of how we can combine our specialist heritage skills and experience in working in an historic context with our specialist sustainability division. We are also really excited to be involved in something that is raising the heritage skills agenda which is something we have a vested interest in.”
